When Ice Gives Way

Snowflakes are fluttering in the crisp December air. The scenery off the back porch is of barren trees surrounding a generous frozen lake- motionless, a veneer of ice now white from the powdery snow. Banks of snow from prior storms hug the rented cottage where I’m settled for a handful of months. Countryside around Mt. Monadnock is immaculate and imaginary in its appearance, but in truth its biting cold and laden in snow, making it cumbersome to walk, baneful for driving.
